The fourth day of the Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers project “A Cultural Case: Sports” was dedicated to exploring Austria’s traditional sports culture and raising awareness about environmental sustainability. Throughout the day, participants experienced the importance of physical activity while also gaining a deeper understanding of traditional sports that form an important part of Austria’s cultural heritage.
The day began with the daily exercise session, which has become an essential part of the project. Participants came together for a half-hour Zumba activity, starting the day with energy and enthusiasm. Through this activity, they experienced the unifying power of sport while observing the positive effects of regular physical activity on both physical and mental well-being. The daily exercise sessions encouraged healthy lifestyle habits and helped participants feel motivated and prepared for the day’s activities.
One of the key themes of the fourth day was environmental sustainability. Participants continued working on creative objects that would be presented at the end of the project using recyclable waste materials. Divided into five groups, they collected recyclable waste from the surrounding area and incorporated these materials into their designs. This activity not only contributed to environmental cleanliness but also increased participants’ awareness of waste management and environmental responsibility. Through this hands-on experience, participants better understood the importance of integrating sustainable practices into everyday life.
The cultural part of the day began with a comprehensive information session delivered by the Austrian team about the country’s traditional sports. Organized as an open session, the activity introduced participants to several traditional Austrian sports, including Ranggeln, Kärntenringen, Status Tag, and Kegel. Participants learned about the historical development, cultural significance, and current status of these sports, gaining valuable insight into the strong relationship between sport and culture.
Following the information session, participants had the opportunity to experience Ranggeln, one of Austria’s oldest traditional sports. Austrian facilitators explained the rules and techniques of this traditional wrestling style in detail. Participants then formed pairs and practiced the sport themselves, enjoying an engaging intercultural learning experience while discovering how Austrian traditions have shaped sporting practices throughout history.
The final sporting activity of the day focused on Kärntenringen, another traditional wrestling sport that reflects Austria’s historical heritage. The activity was conducted with the support of the project stakeholder SFLK – Sport und Freizeitklub Lindwurm Klagenfurt. After learning about the rules and techniques of the sport, participants formed teams and took part in practical demonstrations. Through this experience, they not only learned a new sporting discipline but also gained valuable knowledge about Austrian traditions, values, and cultural identity.
At the end of the fourth day, participants developed a deeper understanding of the role sport plays in preserving and transmitting cultural heritage across generations. At the same time, they strengthened their awareness of environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices, making the day a rich learning experience from both cultural and environmental perspectives.
